Preparing To Move

Getting Organized

Whether you’re moving across town or across the country, planning your move ahead of time can help make moving day less stressful.

7 – 12 weeks before your move

  • Decide what you’re taking to your new home, what you’re disposing of, and what you’re donating.
  • Create an inventory of all your belongings
  • Order boxes and other supplies such as tape, bubble wrap, and permanent markers
  • Research and select a moving company; get written confirmation of your moving date and costs
  • Fill out a change of address form at your local post office or online
  • Plan to update your address after your move is completed: driver’s licenses, banks, employers, subscriptions, credit card companies, insurance providers, and utility companies

Packing For The Move

Don’t wait until moving day to start packing. It’s a good idea to start the packing process before your scheduled move date.

4 – 6 weeks before your move

  • Make note of items that may require additional insurance from your moving company
  • Label and number your boxes; try color-coding labels by room
  • Take photos and label electronic connections to help you reattach them at your new place
  • Avoid using boxes without covers; open boxes make it difficult to stack for transit
  • Pack a box of essential items that you will need immediately after the move

Moving Day

The day has finally arrived; all your planning and preparation paid off. Now you can focus on getting settled into your new place.

  • Make sure your cell phone is charged so family, friends, and movers can reach you throughout the day
  • Accompany movers as they inventory your stuff and make notes about the condition of your belongings
  • Write down your meter readings; when you receive bills from your utility companies make sure the figures match
  • Plan to arrive at your new place with the movers so you can inventory all the boxes and furniture as they arrive
  • Unpack bedrooms and make beds early in the day if you plan on sleeping in your new place the first night
  • Check the moving trucks to ensure everything was moved into your new place
